Style, Decor & More: Is The Answer To Losing Weight In Our DNA?

Is The Answer To Losing Weight In Our DNA?

Disclosure: I received a HomeDNA Collection Kit sample and lab services were waived.

Whether you are working hard on your weight loss journey or just want to shed a few pounds, knowing your body and the best approach to losing weight is crucial to successful weight loss. Every person is different, which means that our bodies will respond differently to what we eat and how much we eat. Do you ever feel like you exercise and eat well, but don't see positive results? Knowing your genetic makeup can hold a wealth of information to help you succeed with your weight loss goals.  In fact, I recently completed a HomeDNA Healthy Weight Collection Kit, and am seriously amazed with the results, and the personal information provided to help me reach and maintain my healthy weight.

For those of you who are not familiar with HomeDNA, it is an easy at-home genetic testing kit that uses the insights from YOUR personal genetic code, to help you better understand your genetic makeup with a scientifically-based DNA analysis and report.

HomeDNA's registration and retrieval process (swabbing) was easier than I thought it would be and took no more than 15 minutes to complete. The step-by-step instructions are very easy to follow. After I registered online and filled out the envelopes, I swabbed my cheeks, placed the swabs in the collection envelope and mailed my samples in the self-addressed envelope provided in the kit. That was it! All I had to do next was wait for the results.

After a few weeks (allow up to 6 weeks), I received a 72-page scientific Healthy Weight Analysis & Report! There report contained an incredible amount of information. Everything you could ever want to know about maximizing your diet success and workout regimen, is right at your fingertips! After spending some time reading through the report, for the first time I feel empowered with information needed to lose weight! I have a customized diet and exercise plan created with the information from my genetic code! HomeDNA's Analysis & Report has taken the guess work out of diet and exercise.

The Analysis & Report provides results in four key areas that can affect the way your body looks and feels:

1) Weight Loss Ability
2) Food
3) Nutrients
4) Response to Exercise

Within each category your analyzed genotype results are followed by a detailed explanation of and successful strategy for each of the four categories. For example, Category 1 determines that my weight loss ability with diet and exercise is low. Ahhh! This means the genes included in Category 1 (Weight Loss Ability) have all been shown in studies to have statistically significant associations with a person's ability to lose weight and keep it off. As you can see from the Report Summary below, my genetic profiles indicates low or below average scores. However, even if I carry the genotypes that potentially reduce my ability to lose weight, etc., my lifestyle and environmental choices will affect whether those genes are expressed or not.

The results provide insight into how into how I can tweak my approach to diet and exercise to optimize fat-loss results.

The Report also provides a detailed 7-day diet plan that contains suggestions for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. The personalized diet plan recommends slimming foods based on MY genes. Isn't that awesome?!

Thankfully, my 7-day menu offers three snacks in the morning, afternoon and evenings. I like to nibble throughout the day and evening, and snacking will help me stay on track. The diet also offers tasty dinners with grilled salmon (or fish), chicken, turkey, beans, and shrimp dishes.

*HomeDNA notes that before making changes to your diet, consult with your physician, registered
dietician, and/or nutritionist.

Keep in mind that the information above shows only a small portion of the information I received. There are 60 pages in my profile that explain everything I need to know about my diet and exercise! For example, after reading the Analysis & Report, I will be adding strength training to my exercise regimen. I have never worked with weights before, but based on my DNA profile, my body should respond well to strength training. The Custom Exercise Plan also suggests different types of strength training exercises and how many times a week it should be performed.

In summary, I absolutely LOVE and recommend HomeDNA's Weight Loss Collection Kit. I could never have imagined the wealth of information I would be given about weight loss - all from a DNA cheek swab! The information provided in the report is nothing short of priceless!

If you are ready to unlock your weight loss potential through genetics, the HomeDNA Collection Kit can be purchased at a CVS near you. The HomeDNA Collection Kit is usually $119, but when you use Promo Code HW50 at check out, you will receive $50 off! That's only $69 for the collection kit! This offer is good through 4/30/17. The scientific information provided and the knowledge gained from an accredited DDC Laboratory, makes it well worth the price.

    1. Hi Dee, Definitely worth checking it out! I'm loving it! My report even created a meal plan with nutrients/foods that my body (genetically) may lack based on my DNA. Crazy!

  2. I had no idea your genetics could determine that much, figured if you tried hard enough anyone can get results.

  9. This makes perfect sense and that's why I think it's so important to know our family history. Knowing what diseases and conditions run in our family can help us ward off or possibly prevent future generations from these conditions.

  14. I have never heard of a weight loss collection kit before. That sounds like it might be helpful for folks without their family medical history handy.

    1. That too! The kit would be especially helpful if you don't know your family history, or if you have a recessive gene, like me. I don't have my parents' DNA traits at all (in terms of weight).

  17. I have always wondered as to how some individuals eat all they can and still do not put on weight while others who eat half as less tend to pile on fat. Maybe the answer lies in the DNA, this test sound pretty interesting in that context too.

  20. "Do you ever feel like you exercise and eat well, but don't see positive results?" Yes totally true and I was kind of aware that our genetics had something to do with it but was also under the impression that eating right and working out is a good balance to fight back with.

    1. Hi Alison,
Sorry for the delay in my response. The DNA Analysis & Report is 72 pages, very thorough, and easy to interpret. Yes! Thank you for asking. I did make changes to both my exercise routine and diet. My DNA responds better to strength training (weights) than aerobics or yoga. I actually like it better and can see the result. My muscles tightened within days. I LOVE carbs, but I have to try to stay away. I've also increased foods with collagen. My DNA had very low collagen. I also freaked out about some other genetic factors, but at least I can be proactive now that I know I'm predisposed to these issues. ...I hope this helps.

    1. Hi Courtney, Sorry for the delay in my reponse. It is amazing what you can learn with the DNA analysis and report for weight. I never would have expected my body to response better to weight lifting than aerobics, but low and behold, it's working! I've increased collagen-rich foods, oh my goodness my collagen was very low. Ahhhh!

  33. it is definetly upsetting to see some eat tons and gain none or others that simply look at food and gain weight. Perhaps it is in our DNA then we are in a way paying for mistakes of others?? just saying
