Style, Decor & More: Creating A Functional Entryway!

Creating A Functional Entryway!

In a perfect world, every home would have a spacious mudroom with bench seating and abundance of storage options. Unfortunately, few homes enjoy such a convenience. This doesn't mean you can't make the most of your entryway. You can create a mini mudroom-like environment that is organized yet neat. You want your kids to be able to find what they need and get out the door for the bus in a hurry, but you also don't want to cringe and make excuses for the mess every time guests walk through the door.

1. Cubbyholes - If you have several children, you absolutely need cubbyholes. Everyone should have their own cubby. This is where gloves, scarves, hats, etc., go. If you want to hide all the clutter, you can by mounting shelves and then placing decorative fabric bins on them. Like the cubbies, everyone gets their own bin. If you have young children, mount the shelves vertically,
so the smallest person gets the shelf closest to the floor. The next tallest gets the next shelf, etc.

2. Hooks - You can never have too many hooks. If you don't have enough, people will try to hang multiple coats on one, and some are bound to end up on the floor. These can hold coats, jackets, snowsuits, and backpacks.

3. Hang a Curtain - Do you love the idea of hooks and shelves for organization, but hate the thought of everyone seeing this as soon as they walk in the door? Hang a curtain near the wall with the shelves and hooks. It will hide everything. If your entryway is visible from your living
room then pick something that will match.

4. Plastic Door Mat - It is fine to have a nice rug in your entryway, but off to the side also have a plastic mat with a lip around the perimeter for wet and muddy shoes and boots. The lip will keep water from getting all over as snow melts off of boots.

5. Add Art - Like any other room in your home, your entryway should also have a focal point. This will draw attention away from clutter. A water fountain from LuxeWaterWalls.com, or one from another online store of your choice, would be perfect. Not only will it create a focal point, it will help the mind transition from the chaotic world outside to a peaceful environment inside.

6. Hang a Mirror - You probably don't care what you look like when you are coming home, but guests will appreciate a mirror to look in upon arrival. If you have teenagers, they will love having a mirror there for a last minute check as they walk out the door.

  1. Those are all fantastic ideas. I have a small cape, so I don't have an entryway, but I so wish I did.

  2. Thanks. You've given me a lot of great ideas here. I never would have thought to add a fountain - how relaxing that would be!
