I'm obsessed with skincare! In fact, discovering the latest and greatest skincare products is one of the best parts of my job! The world of skincare is always evolving and while it can sometimes be tough to find what works best, it is exciting to try products with the latest breakthroughs in skin care science. And while I realize the skincare market can be overwhelming, I hope that by sharing my experiences with you, it will help you make an informed decision on your skin care purchases.

Today I am going to be talking about brown spots on your skin and uneven skin tone. If you have had either of these skin issues, you are probably already familiar with the term hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is used to describe the production of excess melanin (color) in our skin, which leads to the appearance of uneven skin tone or brown spots.

As we age, our skin cells no longer turn over as quickly which puts the brakes on collagen production and opens the door for brown spots and uneven skin tone to appear. Exposure to the sun and hormonal changes are two of the primary reasons we can experience hyperpigmentation, but even younger women can suffer from uneven skin tone as a result of acne and pregnancy. While age spots and uneven skin tone are generally not harmful, they can add years to the look of your skin. No matter what your age, spot-free, flawless skin is important for a healthy, youthful look. Wearing a good sunscreen daily with an SPF30 or higher is

Fortunately, there are skin care products to lighten dark spots and fade discoloration. I sampled five highly-rated topical treatments that were created to fight hyperpigmentation. My skin discoloration is at the top of both my arms. It hasn't appeared on my face or chest, but I know it is only a matter of time if I don't do something to prevent it.

1. Civant Meladerm Pigment Correction - With an award-winning formula of over ten advanced ingredients to target hyperpigmentation, it is no wonder Meladerm has a loyal following. Its airless pump uses innovative technology to keep air out of the bottle preserving the potent and delicate combination of ingredients. The creamy formula spreads easily over my skin with no greasy residue after application. The skin feels soft and smooth and the uneven skin tone has diminished. Civant also stands behind its products with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
*Cruelty-free and Vegan.

2. Paula's Choice C15 Super Booster - For over 35 years Paula's Choice has been committed to using quality and effective products that are proven by science to work. This vitamin C-packed Super Booster is no exception and contains a highly-concentrated vitamin C to smooth and brighten skin. Potent antioxidants including vitamin E, ferulic acid, and skin smoothing peptides are infused for maximum potency. Apply 2-3 drops in the palm of your hand and apply to face and under the eye area, avoiding eyes. The lightweight liquid has a scent that quickly fades when the formula absorbs quickly into the skin.
* Cruelty-free and Vegan

3. Paula's Choice C25 Super Booster - My dermatologist highly recommends vitamin C for age spots and uneven skin tone so naturally, I was thrilled Paula's Choice C25 Super Booster delivers a whopping 25% concentration of vitamin C. The consistency of the C25 Super Booster is  lightweight and feels silky smooth and luxurious as it glides over my skin. There is no greasy residue and my skin feels ultra smooth. The tube is on the small side, but trust me, a little goes a long way and the formula is super easy to apply as much or as little as you need. The formula makes it easy to dab directly onto targetted age spots!
*Cruelty-free and vegan.

4.  Pixi Skintreats Overnight Glow Serum - Massage 2-3 drops of this miracle serum that works while you sleep to brighten and fade sun spots over time. The formula is a bit tacky and the dropper can get quite messy but it's a love-hate relationship since the tacky consistency makes it easier to apply to specific targeted areas. My skin texture feels smoother and darker patches have diminished.
*Cruelty-free and Vegan

5. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant -  This iconic rice-based exfoliating powder is a cult favorite among beauty editors and celebrities. Its powerful skin polisher combines physical and chemical exfoliants to refine skin with age-fighting ingredients and polish skin to perfection. A Skin Brightening Complex of Phytic Acid from Rice Bran, White Tea and Licorice helps to balance uneven skin tone. Formulated for all types of skin. Note: This product can be used in conjunction with the products listed above for maximum skin brightening.
*Cruelty-free and Vegan

In order to test for the effectiveness, the products above were applied to designated areas on both upper arms where visible signs of uneven skin tone could be seen. The products were applied every day for about four weeks. It is important to keep in mind that treating hyperpigmentation takes time, especially if the area being treated is very dark and discolored. In just a short period of time, I can already see visible results in the appearance of my skin using the products mentioned above. It is difficult to choose an absolute favorite and would suggest using a product that would best suit your needs. A thicker formula for targeted spot treatment and a thinner formula for larger areas of uneven skin tone. The results are promising and look forward to the long-term outcome in the coming months.

The best way to prevent hyperpigmentation is to use a proven skin care product like those mentioned above and apply daily sunscreen with an SPF30 or higher. If perspiring or swimming, apply sunscreen more often. Limiting exposure to the sun will also help to reduce the formation of additional sun-induced spots and discoloration.

    1. Dermalogica is amazing and so are the other products. It is hard to pick an absolute favorite so after choosing my faves, I narrow it down by what product formula would work best for a particular skin issue.
