Style, Decor & More: New York Fashion Week Trends To Incorporate Into Your Wardrobe All Year

New York Fashion Week Trends To Incorporate Into Your Wardrobe All Year

Fashion is a Religion. Vogue is the Bible. Anna Wintour is the Pope. New York City is the Church.

New York Fashion Week occurs every September and February in New York City at Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts. NYC is the epitome of high end fashion. New York is the fashion capital of the United States of America, and is one of the main fashion capitals in the entire world. (The others being Milan, Paris and London.) This February the Fall 2017 collections were put on display. People come from all over the world to see the shows. (Fashion designers, fashion magazine editors, fashion writers and bloggers, models, photographers, celebrities, royalty, artists and so forth. NYFW is the ultimate crème de la crème.)

This year the trends ranged from dark colors to jewel tones, political statements to opulent adornments, and feathers and velvet. A popular trend to utilize every season as well, is suiting up! The 80’s theme was popular, with big shoulders and men’s fabrics. (Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Calvin Klein, Simon Miller and Haus Alkire all brought the suits to the runway!) Suits can be worn to professional settings such as work, but also incorporated into street fashion. Suiting up, is not just for business meetings!

The show closed with Marc Jacobs, he’s always a crowd pleaser. New York Fashion Week sets the trends for the whole season and year to come. Typically for Fall, one expects to see a lot of dark colors, deep hues, oversized attire and a variety of coats, for the months when the weather is colder. However; one of the big trends was jewel tones with the darker clothing. Perhaps the biggest trend from NYFW was the pop of color! This is what we are going to see for the rest of Spring and Summer, and into the Fall and Winter.

Here are the New York Fashion Week Trends To Incorporate Into Your Wardrobe All Year:

Fringe Fantastic: Marchesa had silver and jewel toned dresses that featured a lot of fringe. It reminds me of The Great Gatsby and the gorgeous embellishments of the 1920’s fashion. Michael Kors had dresses and skirts with long fringe, that peak out of the bottom of coats and sweater wraps, or can be worn all by itself. It’s reminiscent of the freedom of the 70’s. Jenny Packham, also brought out the 70’s and western vibes. Her collection featured a stunning red dress, with red fringe in two parts of the dress. (Ooh la la, Lady in Red!) Erin Fetherston had jeweled tone pink dresses, which showcased multiple tiers of fringe in a silky fabric, the entire length of the gown. Pretty in pink is always the way to go!

Jewel Tones: Oscar de la Renta is always innovative and beautiful. The collection featured royal blue metallic jewel toned dresses and pants, as well as bubble gum pink pants - paired with bright orange-red tops. Michael Kors brought the color and the cuts with his collection! There were jewel toned, pink and purple, fur coats with a black belt and black boots. Vivienne Tam had bright aqua blue, metallic dresses with satin types of fabrics. It was bold and flattering. Stripes are always in style in the Spring and Summer, and it will be this Fall and Winter as well. Delpozo had multiple bright colors in stripes on dresses that pack the punch with color! Delpozo featured royal blue and black dresses, with more jewel tones in the decals on the necklines and dress skirts in the collection. Naeem Khan, brought artistry and jewels to life with his flowing dresses that are a piece of art! With gorgeous flowing fabrics, chic cuts of fabric, jewel toned maroon and lapis blue. Naeem Khan makes you feel like a goddess!

Oversized Opulence: Tory Burch’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection featured diamond blue blouses with an oversized bow tied below the neck, with oversized fabric in the arms. This look is paired with pants that flow out by the calves and ankles. Nicole Miller brought oversized black pants on the runway, with tight multi-colored tops to wear with it. (In one look, only one arm has a sleeve and one arm is bare. This has been a popular look, that is here to stay! You can start rocking tops with one sleeve this Spring & Summer.) Prabal Gurung showcased oversized beige coats and fur for fierce looks. It is very New York glam, with the classic clean fabrics and fur. Victoria Beckham, featured flowy oversized skirts and sweater tops in her collection. (With bold pops of color, such as shades of red and maroon for a sexy, sophisticated look.) Michael Kors featured classic cool oversized sweaters, and skirts, both in jewel tones. Orange Is The New Black, when it comes to Burnt Orange! Outerwear in burnt orange, that is oversized was super popular this season. Nicholas K, Lacoste, Christian Siriano, Claudia Li and Colovos all feature burnt orange outerwear with oversized cuts and styles. Coach and Philip Lim also brought puffy outerwear to the runway, with the oversized look that we all love. When the weather gets cold, throw on a puffy coat to achieve this look! It makes you appear slim, because you look tiny in something as puffy as a marshmallow on you. It’s soft as well, so everyone will most likely want to hug and squeeze you.

It’s All Politics: Prabal Gurung featured many political statements in the collection that are being very well received! (Especially with everything going on in the world right now!) Alexander Wang has been known to let feminism be represented through his clothing, with his fur tank top shirts that say ‘GIRLS’ on them and are available in pink and white. Pop singer, Ariana Grande, and reality TV star, Teresa Giudice, have both been spotted wearing those girly tops for photo shoots in magazines. There were many timeless t-shirts from the Prabal Gurung collection that said on them, ‘THE FUTURE IS FEMALE’ and ‘YOU CAN’T STOP ME.’ Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet had inspirational tees that read, “Be The Change You Wish To See In The World.” Fashion Gets Political were rockin’ hats that read, ‘MAKE AMERICA NEW YORK.’ There really is no place like NY, where Lady Liberty watches over us.

Feathers are Forever: “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins,” was a popular and catchy campaign for Calvin Klein, that featured Brooke Shields. This year Calvin Klein proved that is still true! There were gorgeous feather cocktail dresses, with white/black/royal blue feathers. Marchesa had pale purple and grey feathered dresses that were ever elegant. Naeem Khan brought classic and contemporary together with a gorgeous dress made with feathers, which also have a bralette top on the upper half of the gown. The feathers were aqua-greens and black shades. (Stunning!) No matter where you are going, or what you may be doing, it’s always an appropriate time to wear feathers in the upcoming seasons!

She Wore Velvet: Marchesa is known for beautiful gowns, and this year was no different. The collection featured beautiful velvet black dresses, with matching velvet fabric bows tied in the hair. Altuzarra had royal blue velvet dresses, with floral decals and bows adorned on the sides and top of the dress. It featured a fierce plunging neckline. The song by Bobby Vinton (and the cover by Lana Del Rey) is true, “She Wore Blue Velvet.” Erin Fetherston had maroon velvet jump suits, with a bold and beautiful plunging neckline. Anna Sui rocked dark purple velvet skirts. Who doesn’t love a soft mini-skirt?

Gilded Gatsby Galore: The Gilded Age, was a great time for fashion. This is because everything sparkled, was elegant and full of details. (Think of The Roaring 20’s & The Great Gatsby levels of extravagance.) Badgley Mischka is known for having the most glamorous and elegant evening wear. This season was no exception, they brought their ‘A Game!’ Badgley Mischka featured a black strapless, floor length gown, with gold, silver and gunmetal metallic on the entire masterpiece. They even had ornate black high heels, with lavish jewels wrapped around the ankles and heels of the shoes. Marchesa opted for gold flowers, embedded onto a sleek black gown. Gold and Marchesa are both timeless. Carolina Herrera, never disappoints – this year she had shiny metallic silver dresses with a narrow v-neckline. You will feel like a goddess when you wear metallic tones for evening wear. Whether you have a cocktail party to attend, or a special occasion event, consider wearing metallic gilded pieces! Jenny Packham’s gowns were a work of art. Her metallic, sheer and metal tones brought sexy elegance to the runway. Wearing these shiny, metal tones, will have you sparkling on the outside – like your personality on the inside!

Live by the motto: “Every day is a fashion show and the world is my runway.”
